Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on 21 November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, not only his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of recurring issues, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
